Monica Smith is the editorial director at Walker Publications. One day, she goes to see
her boss, Harvey Walker, about a problem.
Conversation 1
(knock on the door)
Harvey: Hi, Monica.
Monica: Hi, Harvey. Do you mind if I drop in on you for a minute?
Harvey: No problem. Have a seat. What's up?
Monica: Well, I've just been so busy lately.
Harvey: What else is new? Have you ever not been busy?
Monica: I've never been as swamped as I am now. It seems I'm spending my whole life in this office.

On-the-Job Training 在職訓練(part 2 of 6)
Conversation 2
Harvey: So you'd like a day off?
Monica: I need more than a day off, Harvey. I need help. I need another assistant editor.
Harvey: That sounds great, Monica. But where are we going to find one? It's so hard to recruit people with the right qualifications and skills.
Monica: Well, I've been thinking about Mark White. I think he could do the job.
Harvey: Mark? But we decided just a couple of months ago not to promote him to assistant editor. He's a good writer, but he lacks people skills.

On-the-Job Training 在職訓練(part 3 of 6)
Conversation 3
Monica: True. But you had that talk with him, remember? Ever since then, he's been much better. I've seen quite a turnaround.
Harvey: That's good. Maybe you're right, then. Even so, he needs training before he can supervise.
Monica: Of course he does.
Harvey: But training takes time, and we're already much too busy. We just can't afford to send him out for training. We need him here.
Monica: We don't have to send him out for training, do we? Why not let him learn on the job?

On-the-Job Training 在職訓練(part 4 of 6)
Conversation 4
Harvey: Learn on the job? I suppose that would be all right.
Monica: Great!
Harvey: Just keep a couple of things in mind. You'll be the one to train him. That will take up even more of your time.
Monica: Well, to turn a phrase, "shortterm pain for long-term gain."
Harvey: And I'd like you to develop a training package as you go along. We can use it to train others in the future.
Monica: (sigh) OK.
Harvey: Finally, we'll need a new staff writer to take Mark's place. Mark can begin his supervising career by training his replacement.

On-the-Job Training 在職訓練(part 5 of 6)
Monica immediately went to Mark and told him of his promotion. He was delighted. Then she began to train him. At first, it was slow going. Monica had to spend hours explaining to Mark his new role. She had to answer his many questions and concerns. She had to observe him in action and check his work frequently. She also had to record all the things she was teaching him and compile them into a training package. Monica began to wonder if this shortterm pain would really bring long-term gain.

One month later, Monica dropped in on Harvey again.
Conversation 5
Monica: Harvey, I just want to bring you up to date on Mark.
Harvey: How's he doing?
Monica: Very well. He's a quick study. He's doing a great job of training his replacement. He's even beginning to pick up some of my workload.
Harvey: That's wonderful.
Monica: Yes. Now I have time to get some on-the-job training myself.
Harvey: Training? You? To do what?
