Welcome Aboard! (Part 1 of 5)

A big challenge for any company is finding good staff. Harvey Walker knows all about that. He needs a replacement for his right-hand man, Tom Wilson. Tom left Walker Publications and took a new job in another city. Tom enjoyed his job at Walker Publications and wasn't looking for a change. But one day a headhunter approached him with a very interesting proposition. A company in California needed a manager with Tom's qualifications. The position offered greater responsibility and higher pay. Tom applied and got the job.

Conversation 1

(in Harvey's office, the telephone rings)
Harvey: Yes, Suzie?
Suzie: Mr. Walker, it's time for your appointment with the sales rep from BMI Auto. May I send him in?
Harvey: The BMI sales rep? What does he want?
Suzie: BMI is supplying the new company cars, remember? You were going to finalize the details today.
Harvey: Oh, yes. Listen, I'm very busy. Can't Tom take care of this?
Suzie: Uh, Mr. Walker, Tom's gone. Friday was his last day, remember?
Harvey: Oh, yes. Nuts! I sure wish he were still here.
Suzie: (sigh) Me, too.

Conversation 2

Harvey: (to himself) I need to replace Tom, fast. We're headed for trouble without a good manager. (dials phone)
Suzie: (picking up phone) Yes, Mr. Walker?
Harvey: Suzie, did you call that executive search agency?
Suzie: Yes, weeks ago, Mr. Walker. As soon as Tom announced his resignation.
Harvey: And did you place ads in the newspaper and in our magazines?
Suzie: Yes, Mr. Walker. And we're advertising with an on-line service, too.
Harvey: Do we have any good applications yet?
Suzie: Not really. (looking through mail) Oh, looks like one more just arrived. I'll bring it in.

Conversation 3

(Suzie brings the envelope)
Harvey: Thank you, Suzie.
(Susie leaves)
Harvey: (reading) Hmmm. Local guy... good education... good experience. Looks as if he has some publishing skills, too. Nice résumé! (dials phone) Suzie, please set up an interview with this applicant, Frank Carson. And let's check his references.

That Friday, Harvey Walker interviewed Frank Carson. Harvey asked Frank about his work experience, his strengths and weaknesses, and his goals. Frank had some questions, too, concerning the company and the job. He also asked about the terms of employment, such as pay and benefits.

Harvey: If we offered you the job, when could you start?
Frank: In one month at the earliest. I have to give a month's notice to my present employer.
Harvey: In that case, I'll get right to the point. I think you're a good fit for this company and this position. I'd like to offer you the job. What do you say?
Frank: Thank you very much, Mr. Walker. I accept. I think Walker Publications will be a great place to work.
Harvey: Wonderful! Welcome aboard, Frank! (the two men shake hands)
